Tiffany and Stained Glass Windows
The large window above the high altar depicts an illuminated Celtic revival cross in a field of violet irises, and was designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany & Company. It was given to the church in 1914 in memory of Adaline Elizabeth Van Schaack Vanderpoel (1830-1912), by her two daughters, Mary Vanderpoel Franklin and Margaret Vanderpoel Newcomer. Flanking the window on either side of the altar are four more Tiffany windows which are landscape designs representing the four seasons. These were installed in 1914, having been donated by Margaret in memory of Mary.
The windows in the nave of the church were installed in 1928. The design comes from the Canticle A Song of Creation, which is found in the continuation of Daniel 3 (2nd or 1st century BC) in the Apocrypha. The song is held to be a hymn of praise that Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego sang while in the fiery furnace in Babylon; they were miraculously delivered from this certain death. (The lyrics can be found below.)
